The Utah Beer Festival is Salt Lake City's largest beer event, organized by City Weekly and held annually at The Gateway in downtown Salt Lake City. Founded in 2010, the festival has grown from 10 vendors pouring 25 beers to over 50 breweries serving 200+ beers and ciders from local, regional, and international producers.
The event runs Saturday from 3-9 PM and Sunday from 1-7 PM, with VIP, Early Beer, and Weekend Pass holders enjoying 1 hour early entry each day. Rather than traditional tickets, the festival uses a pay-as-you-go beer passport system — each passport includes 10 punches with refills available in increments of 5. Samples are served in 5 oz mugs. Local food trucks round out the experience. The festival partners with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
The Utah Beer Festival was launched in 2010 by City Weekly, Salt Lake City's alternative newsweekly, with a simple mission: celebrate the growing craft beer scene in a state not traditionally known for its beer culture. In its first year, just 10 vendors poured roughly 25 beers. The festival proved that Utah had a passionate beer community hungry for a large-scale tasting event.
Over the years, the festival expanded dramatically — moving to The Gateway, a downtown open-air shopping and entertainment district, and growing to feature 50+ breweries and 200+ beers and ciders. The innovative beer passport system replaced traditional token-based sampling, allowing attendees to pay as they go. A partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention adds a meaningful charitable dimension to the celebration.
