Fuji to Hood is a biennial Japan/Oregon collaboration beer, cider, and culture festival held at The Redd in Portland's Central Eastside. The 2026 edition marks the third Portland event, bringing together 22 Japanese breweries and 3 cideries with 25 of Portland's finest brewers, cidermakers, and craftsmen to create original collaboration recipes using select Japanese ingredients. The festival also features SakeOne, Shiba Wichern Cellars, and Stone Barn Brandyworks.
Beyond beer and cider, Fuji to Hood celebrates the deep cultural exchange between Japan and Oregon with Japanese cuisine, arts, music, and entertainment throughout the day. Each collaboration brew is a unique creation that blends Japanese brewing traditions with Pacific Northwest craft beer innovation, making every pour a one-of-a-kind experience.
The festival alternates between Portland and Tokyo on a biennial schedule, with Portland hosting in even years. Organized by Beer Friends, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit, Fuji to Hood has become one of the most distinctive and culturally rich beer festivals in the Pacific Northwest.
Fuji to Hood was born in 2018 from the vision of Red Gillen, Ezra Johnson-Greenough, Michael Walcott, and Tomas Sluiter, who saw an opportunity to celebrate the deep brewing connections between Japan and Oregon. The name evokes the iconic volcanic peaks of both regions — Mount Fuji and Mount Hood — symbolizing the cultural bridge the festival creates.
In 2019, Nobuhiro Tajima founded and organized the first Hood to Fuji sister event in Japan, establishing the festival's signature biennial rhythm: Portland hosts in even years, Tokyo in odd years. This alternating format creates a truly international beer exchange, with brewers from both countries traveling across the Pacific to collaborate in person.
What makes Fuji to Hood unique is its commitment to genuine collaboration. Rather than simply importing Japanese beers, the festival pairs Japanese and Oregon brewers to create entirely new recipes using select Japanese ingredients. Each edition produces dozens of one-of-a-kind collaboration brews that exist nowhere else. The festival has grown into a beloved Portland institution that showcases the best of both brewing cultures.
